  • In Dusk Skies, Mara De Luca focuses on a feeling many of us recognize, the moment when daylight begins to fade and everything slows. The painting is rich and dark, but soft touches of light remain, lingering rather than disappearing. This gentle attention to how light shifts and settles connects the work to the California Light and Space movement, where artists explored how light and atmosphere shape the way we experience a space. Rather than telling a story outright, De Luca invites you to spend time with the painting, letting your eye adjust and notice how light continues to glow within the darkness. It’s a calm, reflective piece that feels grounding, open, and easy to live with.

  • This piece brings depth and grounding to the exhibition. While it’s rich and dark, subtle touches of light at the bottom give it a sense of hope, a reminder that even within darkness, life can shine through. It feels inspiring, calm, and meditative, inviting you to slow down and linger. We love to imagine this work in a room with plenty of natural light, which balances its depth and gives it the attention and space it deserves to be fully experienced. As a Southern California gallery, we also appreciate how it offers a fresh perspective on light and space. There’s conceptual depth here, but it’s also quietly beautiful and gentle. Truly, it’s one of a kind.

About the Artist

Mara De Luca was born to Italian parents in Washington, D.C. Early art education took place in D.C. museums, where she developed a love of European painting and a fascination with American post-war Abstraction. Summer trips to Italy provided a fill of Italian art– rich with clouds, light, and illumination. De Luca’s work today extends the celebration of illusionism, romanticism, and the sublime with a deeply informed response to modernist painting. De Luca received an MFA from CalArts, Los Angeles, and a BA from Columbia University, NY. Her work has been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego and is included in collections including the Buck Collection at UC Irvine, Alexander Plaza Berlin, Germany; J.P. Morgan Chase, New York and Fidelity. She has received reviews in Artforum, Cultured Magazine, The Los Angeles Times, and Artweek LA. De Luca is a recipient of the 2019 California Community Foundation Fellowship. She has taught Painting at various University of California departments including UC San Diego, UC Davis and UC Riverside. Based in Los Angeles for over two decades, De Luca now lives and works in New York.
